inI like to make people cry. Not just any old people, but those who matter the most to me. That is to say, I like to make the people I love cry.
Now, before you decide that I’m a twisted woman, let me explain. It’s not that I like to go round dishing out the odd well-placed kick to those I love, or hitting them with a perfectly placed criticism (kicking isn’t my style and criticism would just fall on deaf ears anyway). It’s that I enjoy finding presents that cause the receiver to cry. Proper tears of unbridled joy and emotion.
In the case of my dad, this is easy. He’s a complete wimp who snivels at the sight of a puppy on TV. Before the wrapping paper is even off, he’s a blubbing mess – exactly the reaction I hope for. Continue reading »

inBeing a mum just got fun.
It’s all to do with the bedtime. Frog was given some books for her 1st birthday, you see. Special books. Books which have an important place in my own childhood.
I’ve already banged on about how there’s been a story before bed since Frog was about four months old. Up until now, it’s always been the same one: Bedtime with Humphrey. Continue reading »

inGetting married is pretty expensive, as is saving for a house.
So I am hugely pleased that the wonderful Brother Max brand is sponsoring me to go to the MAD Blog Awards in London in September. I was all prepared to do my acceptance speech for the Best Baby Blog Award via video link on a big screen, but now it turns out I don’t have to.
Of course it could all go horribly wrong. This sponsorship malarkey could actually mean I’ll have to sit there and clap enthusiastically as one of the other finalists goes to accept their award. Continue reading »

When you have a baby, you’re plunged into a world you know nothing about.
No amount of reading or trawling the internet or phoning other mums for advice will help. No matter how many supportive friends or family members come to visit, if you have a question at 1 o’clock in the morning, chances are you’ll have to work out the answer for yourself. Ultimately, it’s your call. Terrifying.
The thing is, I wasn’t used to feeling helpless.
I was used to being the confident one in the room. At work, I was bloody good at my job. I worked hard and I knew what I was doing. Considering I was at work more than I was anywhere else, my “work identity” was me. Continue reading »

inWe’ve taken a fresh approach to interior design this week.
Gone are the old, boring, white walls. Hidden are the original timber beams. And camouflaged are the dull beige carpet and cream rug. In their place are spots of tomato sauce, layered with smudges of mashed potato, accompanied with a fine dusting of rice crispies and crusty sausage.
Frog has taken to decorating like a true pro. She’s really gunning for Laurence Llewelyn Bowen’s job. Continue reading »

inIt’s funny how something as simple as an item of clothing can bring back so many memories.
There’s the first tutu my mum made for me when I was four. I can still hear it tear as my friend attempted to lift me in a less-than-graceful balletic manouvre. Then there’s the white dress I bought in Camden on a trip with my mum and sister and later wore on the first night I ever met the (self-proclaimed) Northern Love Machine.
And there’s the little red shirt. Continue reading »

inThis time last year my world was a very different place.
I had a new baby, which meant a new life. Gone were the days of rushing around a newsroom meeting all sorts of exciting people. Gone were the days of carefree nights out with my friends, set up on a whim after a glass of wine or two. I was a new mum. And I was lonely. Continue reading »

inMy face hurts from laughing.
It’s been one of those weekends where you look around at all your friends and family and realise how lucky you are. It’s also been one of those weekends when you realise you may be a mum now, but you’re really still just a big kid.
It was my hen do, you see. Continue reading »
