Ever since we returned from our first family holiday to France a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been a bit obsessed with our next holiday. There’s something about going on holiday that makes me want to have another one almost immediately – is that just me?!
There are a few lessons we learned on our first holiday abroad as a family of four. The first is that ferry travel suits us down to the ground – no need to worry about luggage allowances or keeping grumpy babies contained in once place? Win. Considering we live just half an hour from a ferry port, it makes sense that we go via boat again next year.
The second lesson is that preparation is key. For example, I found the Huggies Style On The Go wipes incredibly handy for the journey, because I could just wander around with them strapped to my wrist on the ferry. It meant I could shove a spare nappy in my pocket and leave the change bag in the cabin in case of emergencies. When you’re carrying a baby, the less you have to lug around the better.
The third lesson we learned is that, for us, two weeks isn’t enough. I’m self-employed and can work wherever there’s internet and my husband is a teacher, so we do have the option of getting away for much longer over the summer holidays. We’re really, really hoping to be able to do that next year. An extra week on top of the mandatory fortnight would be pure bliss.
With that in mind I’ve already started planning our next year’s escape. Although I love this time of year I’m not fully into autumn mode yet, so thinking about next summer is helping to distract me from the inevitable miserable weather just around the corner.
We’re looking at The Vendee again for part of our trip, as we loved it so much last time. And we’re also thinking about heading inland to the Dordogne. Here’s where you come in – have you stayed in any brilliant places in either of these areas? Are there any gems you know that would suit a young family on a budget? We’re keen to go self-catering again, so I’ve been looking at mobile homes alongside Air B&B properties. I think if we’re away for three weeks it might be fun to mix it up a bit.
Ah holiday, how I miss you.

Your holiday did sound amazing so there’s no wonder you’re longing for the next one. We are away this weekend for our proper first family holiday but it’s only in the uk.
