Sometimes it’s easier to get messy

There’s a point in the afternoon that every parent I know dreads. As 4pm ticks ever closer, my blood pressure starts to rise. I’ve heard some call it the “Witching Hour”, while others call it “Tantrum O’Clock”. Either way, 4pm in our house often signals a one way ticket to Tantrumville. And it’s not pretty.

The thing about 4pm, is that it often coincides with the exact minute that my energy levels have dipped below zero. By this time in the afternoon, all I want to do is crawl under a blanket on the sofa and give in to exhaustion. My toddler’s fractious behaviour, however, would never allow it. So I’ve started trying to ward off 4pm and greet it head on, with a pre-planned activity. Yesterday, it was all about the Sensory Box.

We have arrived at the Stage of Doom – potty training

Review

My toddler will be three years old in 5 months time. My little baby. Tiny little Frog. She is now a fully walking, talking, feisty singing little girl, with bags of personality and a hatred of nappies. Or rather, a hatred of nappies that need to be changed. So it appears that, without even planning to, we have arrived at that dreaded stage – potty training.

The process so far has involved talking about using the toilet, sitting on the toilet, discarding nappies in favour of pants for a full day, going back to nappies and, now, occasionally sitting on the toilet with constant gentle encouragement. (I’m still talking about my toddler here.) Nothing has actually been “produced” on the toilet yet, so to speak.  Continue reading »

Britax Versafix – an end to my car seat woes

When my daughter was tiny – like, newborn tiny – car seats were easy. We’d put her in it, strap it into the car and within seconds she’d be asleep. No fuss. But at around the age of 18 months old she metamorphised into a car seat hating toddler. I think the Britax Versafix may have just changed her back again though.

You know that thing where you’re trying to strap your child into their car seat but they pull a number of different moves to make this completely impossible? My two and a half year old has that down to perfection. She can do the plank, the jellyfish and the rabid, scratching cat. Getting her into a car seat can be a real palava.  Continue reading »

What crafting with a toddler is REALLY like

This is the tree I crafted with my toddler today:

Toilet roll treeNow, I COULD tell you it was a joyous experience. Mother and child bonding over toilet rolls and brown parcel paper, deep in a shared vision of paint and garden design for the doll’s house.

Except it wasn’t.

If I show you these pictures of intense concentration on the face of my two year old, you may be deceived into thinking crafting is a peaceful activity in our house. You may even be conned into thinking time with paint passes tantrum free. Continue reading »

Snow – are you a lover or hater?

Boots in the snow

When I saw the weather forecasts predicting SNOWMAGEDDON earlier this week I sighed. You see, where snow is concerned I am both a lover and a hater.

The child in me loves the snow. It brings back memories of snow days and hot chocolate, building snowmen and sledging in the park. Being the fully fledged southerner that I am, snow was rare in my native Bristol. To wake to even a light sprinkle of the white stuff would mean HUGE excitement. Continue reading »

Sassitude

My daughter has always had attitude. At seven hours old, she let the world know she’d arrived by waking all the other sleeping babies on the hospital ward with loud shouts. The nurses joked she’d be an opera singer. I winced.

Her spirit was apparant when she refused to take a bottle of expressed milk. Ever. Medicine on a spoon? No way. In fact, if she didn’t want to do it or she wasn’t 100% in control of it, she was not a fan. Not a fan at all.

I’ve since learned that the best way to persuade my two and a half year old to do something not involving chocolate or paint is to make her think it was her idea. This helps in certain situations, but not in ones involving a new personality trait she’s been displaying recently. Continue reading »

My toddler, the Facebook addict

ImageI have to admit to something now which may cause raised eyebrows and a few grunts of judgment. I’m sorry. I tried to stop it, but it would appear it is too late. My toddler is addicted to Facebook.

There, I said it.

She accidentally discovered Facebook on my phone the other day, closing down Twitter due to the lack of pictures. I think she was searching for YouTube but can’t be sure. At the tender age of two and a half she is a social media queen. I hate it. Continue reading »

Upcycled dolls’ house: the reveal

Christmas, dolls' house, gifts, presents, second hand, toddlers

I hope she likes it. I really, really hope she likes it.

Never have I been so excited to give something to my daughter. Her main present this year is a second hand dolls’ house. We knew we wanted to get her one this year but didn’t want to spend a fortune as she has some other presents too and didn’t want the day to become a gluttony of stuff, stuff and more stuff – most of which she’ll cast to one side.

So we searched high and low for a special, yet inexpensive, wooden dolls’ house. And we couldn’t find one ANYWHERE.

A few weeks ago I put out a desperate plea on the noticeboards of the Netmums nearly new section. Within 48 hours, a retired childminder who lived just down the road had emailed me. She offered me an old wooden dolls’ house, with furniture for £10.

I was dubious but the gleaming price of a tenner was too much to resist. We collected it and I knew it would be just right.

Here’s the transformation: Continue reading »

DON’T KISS ME MUMMY!

I should have seen it coming. The signs were clear. It was the little things at first; refusing to come to the dinner table without moaning, muttering “it not fair” at the tiniest request from her mother. But I was naive. Blinkered to the fact my child is but two years old.

The stark truth revealed itself last weekend. When asked what she wanted for Christmas, rather than shouting, “CHOC CHOC MUMMY!”, my two year old clearly stated, “Justin Bieber CD”. And there was a definite eye-roll in there somewhere.

In the car yesterday, as I went to insert her nursery rhyme CD, Frog quickly chirped from the back, “No Mummy. I want Nicki Minaj.” Continue reading »
