Ferry vs plane

When we went to Spain back in September we travelled by ferry. It wasn’t the first time I’d travelled by ferry, but it was the first time I’d travelled by ferry as a mum. When we’ve gone abroad as a family before, it’s only ever been by plane.

I will admit I was a tad nervous. I imagined hours at sea, with a child who was bored, tired and grumpy. Compared to a plane, the 24 hour ferry crossing seemed a little intimidating. I mean, what can you do on a boat for 24 hours anyway?

Quite a lot as it turns out. We travelled on board Brittany Ferries’ flagship ship, the Pont Aven. There were restaurants, bars, a cinema and even a swimming pool. We saw dolphins and dined looking at the sea. We ate a three course meal and slept like babies. Far from being an experience to get through with gritted teeth, it proved to be the beginning of the holiday. 

The great thing about travelling by ferry when you have children is the fact you don’t have to worry about luggage allowance. You’re in your own car, so you can take as much as you can cram into the boot. If the kids get bored, there are shops on board, so you can buy them new colouring things or even a toy if you like. There are decks that they can venture out on to get fresh air, play areas and lots of things to look at.

When we flew to Turkey a couple of years ago it certainly wasn’t that easy. We had to worry about how many nappies we could fit in the bag, whether we should bother with a buggy, not to mention how we would keep a baby occupied in one seat for four hours without crying. The holiday didn’t begin until we touched down. It was what I would call a relaxing journey.

Brittany Ferries have created an infographic which shows how easy it is to travel by ferry, compared to a plane. I didn’t need persuading that ferries are a great way to travel, but if I did this would totally do the job…
